Hosted desktops

The desktop stops
being a place

Nothing is stored on the machine in front of you. That single change removes most of what people ring an IT company about.

What moves, and what stays where it is

A hosted desktop is your Windows desktop — the same applications, the same files, the same printers — running on managed infrastructure in a UK data centre rather than on the computer under the desk. You reach it from a PC, a laptop, a thin client or a tablet, and it looks and behaves the same from all of them.

Line-of-business software almost always moves with it. Some things deliberately stay local: scanners, card machines, label printers and anything on the end of a physical cable. We map that before anything is quoted, because “will our scanner still work?” is the question that decides whether a project is judged a success.

Why businesses make the move

The machine on the desk stops mattering — replace it, lose it or spill coffee on it and the work is untouched
One environment to patch, back up and secure instead of every PC in the building
A new starter has a working desktop the same day, with no build and no delivery to wait for
Capital spend on servers and replacement PCs becomes a predictable monthly cost
Remote and hybrid working stop being an exception that needs its own separate set of rules

Performance is a design decision, not a hope

Hosted desktops get a bad name when they are undersized. We specify each environment against the applications that will actually run on it — the database three people hammer at month end, the report that pulls a full year, the twenty browser tabs nobody is ever going to close. The sizing is done for the busy hour, not the quiet average.

Environments are dedicated rather than shared, so how your desktops perform does not depend on what an unrelated business is doing on the same hardware that afternoon.

Where the data sits, and what happens if you leave

Everything runs on UK-based infrastructure. We will tell you in writing where your data is held, who can reach it and how it is backed up — which is the detail your own clients, insurers and auditors eventually ask for.

If you decide to go elsewhere, the data is yours. We hand it over in a usable form and work with whoever comes next. iKORE has been running hosted environments since 2015, and how a customer leaves matters as much as how they arrive.

It is a managed service, not a rental

Hosting a desktop is the easy part. The value sits in what surrounds it: monitoring, patching, backups that are restored as a test rather than assumed, and a support desk that answers when something is wrong. That is the same managed IT support and cyber security we provide to on-premise customers — the desktop simply happens to live somewhere better suited to it. Accountancy practices have a version of this page of their own, covering IRIS, Sage and filing-season load: hosted desktops for accountants.

FAQ

Is this the same as Remote Desktop?
It delivers a full Windows desktop, but the difference is everything around it: managed performance, patching, backup, security and a support desk. Remote Desktop is a technology. This is a service built on it.
Will our applications work?
In most cases, yes, and we check rather than assume. The assessment lists every application, add-in and integration you depend on and confirms how each one behaves before anything is committed.
Do you host in the UK?
Yes. Your hosted desktops and data sit on UK-based infrastructure, and we will confirm the detail in writing for your own records.
What about printers and scanners?
Common business printers, scanners and peripherals are supported, and specialist devices are checked individually during the assessment. This is the part of a migration that most often gets skipped, so we deal with it first rather than last.
Can we move in stages?
Yes, and it is usually the better way. Departments or user groups move in phases so there is never a single weekend everything depends on.
What happens if our internet connection fails?
The desktop and the data are unaffected — they are not in your building. Work continues from anywhere with a connection, including a phone hotspot, and most customers add a backup line at the office so a failed circuit is an inconvenience rather than a lost day.
How many users does this suit?
Most of the environments we run have between five and sixty users. Below that it can still make sense, particularly where staff work from more than one place.
How is it priced?
Per user, per month, against the specification your applications actually need rather than a single off-the-shelf package. We quote after the assessment so the figure reflects your environment instead of an average one.
