IRIS, TaxCalc and Sage on Cloud Desktop: What UK Accountancy Practices Need to Know
The most common question practices ask before moving to a cloud desktop: "Will our software actually work?" The answer is yes โ but not all cloud setups are equal. Here is what to check before you commit.
IRIS, TaxCalc, and Sage are the backbone of most UK accountancy practices. They are not lightweight web apps โ they are complex, database-driven applications that have been built and refined over decades to meet the specific needs of UK tax and accounts compliance. Running them on a cloud desktop is something many practices are now exploring, but with a legitimate question at the front of their minds: will the software work the same way it does on a local PC?
The short answer is yes. But the longer answer matters more โ because how you host these applications, and on what infrastructure, determines whether that "yes" holds up in January when every practice in South London is filing simultaneously.
How hosted desktop actually works for accountancy software
A hosted desktop is not the same as running software in a web browser. It is a full Windows desktop environment โ running on a server in a data centre โ that you access over the internet from any device. When you log in, you see a normal Windows desktop, with your software installed and configured exactly as you would have it on a local machine.
This distinction matters because IRIS Accountancy Suite, TaxCalc, and Sage 50 are all desktop applications โ they run as Windows programs, not as websites. They require a Windows environment to run. A hosted desktop provides exactly that environment, remotely. The experience, for the user, is functionally identical to sitting at a desk in the office โ except they could be doing it from home, from a client's site, or from anywhere with a reliable internet connection.
๐ก Key point
Running IRIS, TaxCalc, or Sage on a hosted desktop does not require a cloud version of those applications. The desktop versions โ which most practices already use and are familiar with โ run natively in the hosted environment, unchanged.
The three main accountancy software packages โ and how they run on cloud desktop
Tax & Accounts
IRIS Accountancy Suite
The most widely used practice management suite in UK accountancy. Runs natively on hosted desktop. IRIS also offers its own hosted product (IRIS Anywhere) โ but this uses Microsoft's public cloud rather than dedicated infrastructure.
โ Fully supportedTax & Compliance
TaxCalc
Used by over 12,000 UK practices. The desktop version runs natively on hosted desktop. TaxCalc is also developing a browser-based cloud version โ but has confirmed the desktop product will not be retired and customers will not be forced to migrate.
โ Fully supportedAccounting
Sage 50 & Sage 200
Sage's desktop accounting products run natively on hosted desktop environments. Sage also offers cloud subscription products (Sage Accounting, Sage Intacct) โ these run in a browser and do not require a hosted desktop at all.
โ Fully supportedIRIS Anywhere vs a dedicated private cloud: what is the difference?
Practices considering cloud hosting for IRIS will likely encounter IRIS Anywhere โ IRIS's own hosted desktop product. It is worth understanding what IRIS Anywhere is before assuming it is the only or best option.
IRIS Anywhere runs on Microsoft's public cloud infrastructure โ specifically Azure. This means your IRIS environment sits on shared Microsoft infrastructure, hosted in Microsoft data centres. It is a legitimate product from a reputable company, and it works. But it carries the same tradeoffs as any shared public cloud:
- Performance can vary depending on shared infrastructure load
- Your data sits on Microsoft's platform, subject to Microsoft's data residency and processing terms
- Pricing scales per user, indefinitely
A dedicated private cloud โ where your IRIS environment runs on a server that belongs to your practice alone, managed by a specialist provider โ offers a different set of tradeoffs:
- Consistent performance regardless of what other practices are doing on their systems
- Data stored in UK data centres under your provider's control, not a major public cloud platform
- Ability to run IRIS alongside all other software your practice uses โ TaxCalc, Sage, Microsoft 365, document management โ in a single unified environment
iKore's approach
iKore provides a dedicated private cloud environment โ your own server, your own network โ configured around your full software stack. IRIS, TaxCalc, Sage, Microsoft 365, and any other applications your practice uses all run together in one unified desktop, on infrastructure that belongs to your practice alone.
The multi-software problem โ and why it matters
Most accountancy practices do not run a single application. They run IRIS or TaxCalc for compliance, Sage or Xero for bookkeeping, Microsoft 365 for email and documents, a document management system, possibly a practice management tool. On a local server or PC, these all run together seamlessly on the same machine.
On a cloud desktop, this is only seamless if all your software is installed and configured within the same hosted environment. A practice that hosts IRIS with one provider, runs Sage separately, and uses Microsoft 365 through the standard web app will create a fragmented experience โ multiple logins, potential compatibility issues, and data that sits in different places.
The right cloud desktop setup consolidates everything into a single environment. One login. One desktop. All your software, running together, exactly as it does locally โ but accessible from anywhere.
| Software | Desktop version on hosted desktop | Native cloud/browser version available | iKore hosted desktop |
|---|---|---|---|
| IRIS Accountancy Suite | โ Fully supported | IRIS Anywhere (Azure-based) | โ Included |
| TaxCalc | โ Fully supported | In development (CloudConnect) | โ Included |
| Sage 50 / Sage 200 | โ Fully supported | Sage Accounting (separate product) | โ Included |
| Microsoft 365 | โ Fully supported | Web apps available | โ Included |
| Xero / QuickBooks | Browser-based โ no desktop install needed | Native cloud products | โ Accessible via browser |
| HMRC Making Tax Digital | Via IRIS/TaxCalc/Sage integration | Via bridging software | โ Fully compatible |
Performance during filing season โ the real test
The question that matters most for an accountancy practice is not whether IRIS works on a cloud desktop on a quiet Tuesday in June. It is whether it works reliably in the last week of January, when every user is running the application simultaneously and filing deadlines are hours away.
On a shared cloud platform, performance during peak periods depends on what other practices are doing. If a provider has fifty practices on the same server infrastructure, and all fifty are simultaneously filing self-assessment returns in January, every practice on that infrastructure is competing for the same resources.
On a dedicated private server, this problem does not exist. The server belongs to your practice. No other practice's workload affects your performance. January looks the same as August โ because the infrastructure is sized for your practice's needs, not shared across dozens of others.
What to check before moving your software to a hosted desktop
- Confirm which version of your software you are running โ desktop or cloud. Desktop versions run on hosted desktop natively; browser-based cloud versions do not need a hosted desktop at all
- Ask whether the hosted environment is shared or dedicated โ shared infrastructure affects performance under load
- Confirm all your software can be installed in a single environment โ not split across multiple providers or logins
- Check that your software licences permit installation in a hosted environment โ most do, but confirm with your software vendor
- Ask how the provider handles software updates โ patching IRIS or TaxCalc in a hosted environment should be handled by the provider, not your team
- Confirm the migration plan โ a reputable provider should build your new environment in parallel with your existing setup and test thoroughly before switching over
Making Tax Digital โ does it affect your cloud choice?
MTD (Making Tax Digital) is HMRC's programme to move tax administration online, requiring practices to submit returns through compatible software. MTD for Income Tax is being phased in from April 2026 for self-employed individuals and landlords with income above ยฃ50,000.
IRIS, TaxCalc, and Sage are all MTD-compatible. Running them on a hosted desktop does not affect MTD compatibility โ the software submits to HMRC directly, in the same way it does from a local machine. The cloud layer is invisible to HMRC's systems.
